India opener Sanju Samson praised Jasprit Bumrah for his brilliant death bowling after India defeated England national cricket team by seven runs in the semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The exciting match took place at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, March 5. India posted a huge total of 253 runs after being asked to bat first.
Samson played a superb innings at the top of the order. The right-handed batter scored 89 runs from just 42 balls. His attacking knock helped India build a strong total.
England fought hard in the chase. Jacob Bethell scored a brilliant maiden T20I century. However, England still fell seven runs short of the target.
Samson was named Player of the Match for his impressive innings. But the Indian batter felt that Bumrah deserved the award for his crucial performance in the final overs.
“So yeah, very happy how the team turned up today, and all credit goes to Jasprit Bumrah. I think he is a world-class bowler, once in a generation bowler, I think that’s what he delivered today. I think this should go to him, actually. If we didn’t bowl that way in the death overs, I think I would not be standing here. All credit goes to the bowlers, how they backed themselves in the tough conditions,” Samson said during his post-match interview.
Bumrah bowled the 16th and the 18th overs during England’s chase. He conceded only 14 runs in those two overs. His final over went for just six runs. The fast bowler finished with figures of 1 for 33. He also dismissed England captain Harry Brook.
Sanju Samson praises India’s batting approach
Samson also spoke about India’s positive start with Ishan Kishan after the early dismissal of Abhishek Sharma. The pair built a quick partnership of 97 runs from just 45 balls.
“As I said before, I think you need to assess the conditions. We have played a lot of cricket here in Wankhede, as I said before, chasing becomes a bit easier here. They won the toss, put us into bat, so we knew after the way we batted, the way myself and Ishan batted, the partnership which we had for after Abhishek got out, I thought that I think 250 should be, I think, possible here,” Samson added.
India will now face New Zealand national cricket team in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on March 8 at Narendra Modi Stadium. The team will aim to become the first men’s side to defend the T20 World Cup title.
