Chelsea trounces Manchester United to reach final

Chelsea stayed on course for a third-successive Continental League Cup victory after defeating Manchester United 3-1 in their semi-final on Wednesday.

The trophy winners in 2020 and 2021, will compete either Tottenham or Manchester City in next month’s final.

Pernille Harder and Jessie Fleming put Chelsea 2-0 up at Kingsmeadow and, though United’s Vilde Boe Risa reduced the loss, Jess Carter netted their third before the interval.

The visitors played the final 13 minutes with 10 players following goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley was given a straight red card for her challenge on Chelsea substitute Sam Kerr outside the box.

Harder scored a fine solo goal to break the deadlock for Chelsea in the 26th minute.

The visitors countered immediately when Boe Risa fired the near post just a minute later.

But Chelsea reclaimed their two-goal advantage prior the break, with Carter rupturing into the area to finish.

United lost for the first time in eight matches in all tournaments, defeated for the first time in normal time since November 21.
