Jasprit Bumrah becomes second Indian to take 100 T20I wickets, first bowler to take 100 wickets across all formats

Jasprit Bumrah created history during the first T20I against South Africa at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Tuesday, December 9. The star fast bowler picked up his 100th wicket for India in T20 internationals. With this feat, he became only the second Indian bowler to reach the 100-wicket mark in the shortest format.

Arshdeep Singh was the first Indian to achieve this milestone. He reached 100 T20I wickets earlier this year during the Asia Cup 2025 match against Oman. Both Bumrah and Arshdeep played together in the Cuttack game.

Bumrah entered the series with 99 T20I wickets from 80 matches. India set South Africa a target of 176 runs on a pitch that helped the bowlers. Bumrah and Arshdeep attacked with the new ball. Arshdeep took two wickets in his first two overs. Bumrah had to wait until the 11th over for his historic moment.

Bumrah dismissed Dewald Brevis to complete his 100th T20I wicket. Suryakumar Yadav took the catch. Later in his spell, he also removed Keshav Maharaj. The Mumbai Indians pacer ended with excellent figures of 2 for 17 in three overs.

With this achievement, Bumrah also joined an elite list in world cricket. He is now the fifth bowler to take 100 wickets in all three formats. The others are Tim Southee, Lasith Malinga, Shakib Al Hasan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi. Bumrah now has 234 Test wickets, 149 ODI wickets, and 101 T20I wickets.

Arshdeep Singh now leads the Indian T20I wicket chart with 107 wickets from 69 matches. Bumrah is close behind with 101 wickets in 81 games.

Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel took two wickets each. Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube also took one wicket. South Africa were bowled out for just 74 while chasing 176.

India won the match easily and took a 1-0 lead in the series. The second T20I will be played at Mullanpur on Thursday, December 11.
