The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is considering launching a six-a-side cricket tournament called HBL PSL Sixes. The proposed competition would take place during the off-season and follow a format similar to the Hong Kong Sixes.
PSL chief executive Salman Naseer confirmed the development on October 22, 2026. However, he clarified that the tournament is still under discussion and no final decision has been made.
“Nothing is finalised but there are some exciting plans, and one of them is a sixes tournament, called the HBL PSL Sixes, which will be in the off-season,” said Naseer as quoted by Cricinfo.
The proposal was discussed after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reviewed different options during the PSL governing council meeting in September. The board is exploring ways to create additional commercial opportunities for the league and its franchises.
PCB Eyes New Revenue and Expansion Opportunities
The proposed HBL PSL Sixes could help franchise owners and the league’s broadcast partner earn additional revenue. The shorter format would also require fewer resources than a regular T20 competition.
Since 2020, the PSL has been played entirely in Pakistan. Its matches have mainly taken place in Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi. The new tournament could allow the league to reach smaller cities and stadiums that have not hosted PSL matches.
“We will look into the prospect of launching this tournament, and it will be very exciting, entertaining and engaging for the fans when it becomes a recurring feature,” said Naseer.
“And maybe even going to the smaller stadiums and smaller cities, where we have not been able to take PSL and we know the fans are eager to watch cricket. So a smaller event might be doable, which is what we are exploring,” he added.
However, scheduling remains a major challenge. The PCB will need to find a suitable window for overseas players, whose international commitments often leave limited free time.
The PSL will also overlap with the Indian Premier League for the third consecutive year in 2027. This could further reduce the availability of international stars.
The PCB has not announced a launch year or confirmed dates for the proposed competition. Further discussions are expected before any final decision is made.
