Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are searching for a new head coach after Stephen Fleming ended his 18-year association with the franchise on July 13, 2026.
The five-time IPL champions are now looking at several candidates. However, the franchise appears to be leaning towards an overseas coach.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has indicated that the franchise has received interest from several candidates. The search is still in its early stages.
“We have not started applying our minds on this. First, we will have a coach. We have got calls from many interested candidates. We will sit and finalise,” said CSK CEO.
Why is CSK prioritising the coaching appointment?
The overseas preference could reduce Hemang Badani’s chances of getting the job. Badani was reportedly considered during the early stages of the search. However, no final decision has been announced.
Names such as Ravichandran Ashwin and Rahul Dravid have also been linked with the position. The franchise is yet to confirm any shortlist.
Fleming’s exit came after a difficult period for CSK. The team finished 10th in IPL 2025 and eighth in IPL 2026. It also missed the playoffs for the third straight season.
Fleming had been one of the most successful coaches in IPL history. His long association with CSK came to an end after the team’s recent struggles.
Reports have also suggested that Fleming could help Brendon McCullum secure the CSK coaching role. However, there is no official confirmation of this development.
CSK will also consult important figures before finalising Fleming’s replacement. Viswanathan and director Rupa Gurunath are expected to discuss the decision with MS Dhoni and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
The franchise wants its coaching structure settled before making major squad decisions. This includes any possible move for Hardik Pandya.
For now, CSK’s focus remains on finding the right head coach for the next IPL cycle.
