Brendon McCullum keen to continue as England coach after ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final exit

England head coach Brendon McCullum has said he would like to continue in his role despite England’s exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

England were knocked out after a thrilling semi-final defeat to India national cricket team at Wankhede Stadium. India won the match by seven runs after defending a huge total of 253.

Speaking after the game, McCullum admitted the past few months had been difficult for the team. England had earlier struggled in the The Ashes in the 2025–26 season. However, the former New Zealand captain believes those challenges can help the team improve in the future.

England nearly chased down the massive target in the semi-final. Jacob Bethell played a brilliant innings and scored a century. The young batter kept England in the contest for most of the chase.

McCullum also praised England captain Harry Brook for helping shape the identity of the white-ball team since taking over the leadership role.

“Yeah, it’s been busy, hasn’t it? There’s been a bit going on across different formats, but I think the white-ball side has been exceptional in the post-Ashes period. We’ve played some good cricket, and it’s got a real identity about it as well under Brookie’s captaincy,” McCullum was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Brendon McCullum says he would love to continue as coach

McCullum is currently contracted as England’s all-format head coach until the end of 2027. However, the England and Wales Cricket Board had earlier announced that it would review the performances of the men’s teams.

England’s international schedule will now take a short break before the home Test series against New Zealand national cricket team in June.

Despite recent results, McCullum said he still enjoys the role and wants to keep working with the team.

“Look, I love the job. I think it’s a great job. It doesn’t come without its challenges, of course, but that’s the nature of it. I feel like we’ve achieved some really cool things over the last few years, but there’s still so much to achieve with the side across all formats. And I would love to carry on.

“We’ll see what unfolds over the next little while. For now, after being on the road for a fair bit of time, it’s a matter of getting home and hopefully watching some fast horses and playing some shocking golf, and it’s taking a bit of time to reflect,” he concluded.

England had a strong tournament overall. The team won six of their eight matches in the competition and showed great fight in the semi-final.
