The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the eight Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise owners have discussed a possible change to the PSL 2027 schedule.
The league could move from its recent April-May window to January. However, no final decision had been made as of September 5, 2026.
Walee Technologies, which holds the PSL media rights in Pakistan until 2029, proposed the change. The company also owns the Rawalpindi franchise.
Walee believes the April-May period gives the league lower advertising returns after Ramazan. It feels an earlier window could improve the PSL’s commercial performance.
However, the franchise owners are reportedly in favour of keeping the April window. This has left the PCB and franchises without a common position.
Why January could be difficult for PSL 2027
The PCB has also suggested a mid-year tournament under the current rights agreement. The idea could help the franchises and broadcaster earn additional revenue.
The governing council also discussed entering the Esports sector. This comes amid concerns about falling PSL viewership after Pakistan’s recent international results.
The first nine PSL editions, from 2016 to 2024, were played in February and March. The league moved to April-May in 2025 and 2026. This was due to the Champions Trophy 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026.
With both tournaments now over, an earlier PSL window is possible.
However, January or February could create problems. Overseas player availability is one major concern. The SA20 and Big Bash League are also held during this period. PSL teams could face competition for international players.
Weather is another issue. Punjab venues such as Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi can experience cold nights in January and February. Temperatures can drop to single digits. Fog can also affect matches and television broadcasts.
For now, the PCB has made no official announcement. Discussions over the PSL 2027 window are still continuing.
