Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has confirmed that the franchise is not in a hurry to appoint a new head coach. CSK parted ways with long-time coach Stephen Fleming in July after a difficult period for the team.
Fleming had been associated with CSK since the inaugural IPL season in 2008. He became the team’s head coach in 2009. During his 17-year stint, CSK won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. Gaikwad said the franchise has enough time to make the right decision.
Gaikwad Ready to Continue as CSK Captain
Gaikwad said CSK will appoint a new head coach, but the management does not need to rush the process.
“We will have a head coach. The management is obviously thinking about it. There is still plenty of time before the IPL, so there is no rush to make a decision,” Gaikwad told the reporters, as quoted by The Tribune.
The captain also spoke about his role at CSK. Gaikwad took charge of the team in 2024. However, CSK have failed to reach the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.
The team finished fifth in 2024, 10th in 2025 and eighth in 2026. His captaincy has faced questions after the team’s poor results.
CSK have also signed Sanju Samson, who has previous IPL captaincy experience. Despite this, Gaikwad said he remains happy to lead the franchise.
“Yes, it has definitely changed a lot. I won’t deny that. Taking over from MS Dhoni comes with a lot of responsibility because of his immense success, and naturally, there are high expectations for more wins and titles. But that’s part of the role. As long as I continue to enjoy it, I’m happy to do it,” he said.
Gaikwad also asked CSK fans to remain patient during the team’s transition.
“As CSK fans and as a franchise, we’ve been on an incredible journey. Since 2008, almost every cycle has brought us an IPL trophy, and very few franchises have been able to achieve that level of consistency. Our fans have stood by us through some incredible moments, and now we need them to stay with us through the difficult times as well,” he concluded.
