Portugal Reach FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockouts But Questions Remain After Colombia Draw

Portugal secured a place in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after playing out a 0-0 draw against Colombia in their final Group K match on Saturday.

Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to score after making history earlier in the tournament by becoming the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups. This time, Portugal struggled to create chances against a strong Colombian side.

Colombia finished on top of Group K after producing the better performance. Portugal advanced as runners-up and will now face Croatia in the Round of 32. DR Congo also qualified after coming from behind to beat Uzbekistan 3-1. They will meet England in the knockout stage.

Portugal Need to Improve Before Croatia Clash

Although Portugal avoided defeat, their performance raised several concerns. Colombia controlled large parts of the game and created more opportunities. They attempted 24 shots compared to Portugal’s 13.

Goalkeeper Diogo Costa was Portugal’s standout player. He made six important saves to keep his side in the match. Colombia also had a late goal ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Portugal’s midfield failed to control the game. Players like Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, Ruben Neves and Joao Felix struggled to build attacks. Cristiano Ronaldo often waited inside the penalty area for crosses, but his teammates failed to provide quality service.

Portugal looked much more dangerous in their earlier match against Uzbekistan, where they regularly attacked from wide areas and created chances for Ronaldo. That approach was missing against Colombia.

The result also changed the knockout bracket. Portugal will now face Croatia instead of finishing as group winners. Croatia’s experienced midfield is expected to provide an even tougher challenge.

Despite reaching the knockout stage, Portugal know they must improve quickly. Their attacking play lacked rhythm and creativity against Colombia. If they repeat the same performance against Croatia, their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign could come to an early end.
