India’s ODI Captain Shubman Gill reveals multiple changes to be made after embarrassing series loss against NZ

India suffered a shocking 41-run defeat against New Zealand in the third and final ODI on Sunday in Indore. The loss also meant India lost the three-match series 1-2. This was the first time New Zealand won an ODI series on Indian soil.

Asked to bat first, New Zealand put up a strong total of 337/8 in 50 overs. Daryl Mitchell once again led the charge. He scored a brilliant century and continued his fine form throughout the series.

In reply, India struggled from the start. Virat Kohli stood firm at one end and scored his 85th international century. However, he did not get much support from the rest of the batting lineup. India were eventually bowled out for 296, falling short by 41 runs.

After the match, India captain Shubman Gill admitted the team was disappointed with the performance.

“After the first match, coming here 1-1, the way we played is disappointing. There are areas we need to reflect on and improve. The way Virat is batting is always a plus. The way Harshit batted in this series-batting at No. 8 is not easy-was impressive. The fast bowlers also bowled well throughout the series,” Gill said at the presentation ceremony.

Gill also spoke about planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup. He said the team wants to give young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy more chances.

“Keeping the World Cup in mind, we want to give Nitish Kumar Reddy opportunities. We want to give him enough overs to see which combinations work for us and what kinds of deliveries suit him,” he added.

Gill’s comments came a day after assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate admitted Nitish was not getting enough chances.

New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell was named Player of the Series. He scored 84, 131* and 137 in the three matches.

“It’s really nice to contribute to the team. To win here in India is special. As a group, the way we built partnerships was crucial, and it’s nice to be up there,” Mitchell said.

The series loss will force India to reflect as they look ahead to future challenges.
