Virat Kohli might not have had the best time with the bat in the ongoing ODI series against Australia. But when it came to fielding, he once again reminded everyone why he is still the heartbeat of Indian cricket. After scoring two ducks in the first two games, the 36-year-old bounced back in his own special way. He took two sharp catches in the third ODI, which helped him create a new record in international cricket.
Virat Kohli moves past Kallis in the record books
In the third and final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Kohli grabbed two outstanding catches one at square leg and another at long-off. With these, he went past Jacques Kallis’ record of 338 international catches. The Indian superstar now has 339 catches in international cricket. This makes him fourth on the all-time list for most catches by a fielder.
Only three legends are ahead of him Mahela Jayawardene (440), Ricky Ponting (364), and Ross Taylor (354). It is another big milestone for Kohli, who continues to set new standards in fitness and fielding.
Virat Kohli’s first moment of brilliance came when he reacted quickly at square leg to dismiss Matthew Short (56) off Washington Sundar’s bowling. It was a low, sharp catch that stunned the crowd.
His second catch was even tougher. Standing at long-off, Kohli judged a high ball perfectly to remove Cooper Connolly (23) off Harshit Rana’s bowling. He made the difficult look easy, once again proving his sharpness on the field. Both catches reminded fans of the vintage Kohli, full of energy, intensity, and commitment.
Australia collapse after strong start
After choosing to bat first, Australia began well and were comfortably placed at 183/3. Matt Renshaw top-scored with a fine 56 off 58 balls. But the team suffered a dramatic collapse and were all out for 236.
