Shreyas Iyer Makes Strong Statement and Warning to Gautam Gambhir After Becoming India’s New T20I Captain

Shreyas Iyer has officially been named India’s new T20I captain. The Mumbai batter replaces Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to the T20 World Cup 2026 title. However, a dip in form during and after the tournament led to a leadership change.

Iyer’s appointment did not come as a surprise. He has built a strong reputation as a captain in the IPL. He previously led Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings. His leadership qualities have been praised by players and experts alike.

Known for backing his teammates, Iyer has earned the reputation of being a player-friendly captain. Several cricketers have spoken about the confidence he gives them. Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh is one such example. He has credited Iyer for helping him improve as a player.

While taking over one of the biggest roles in Indian cricket, Iyer made it clear that he will remain true to himself.

Shreyas Iyer Stands Firm On His Leadership Style

India head coach Gautam Gambhir is known for having strong cricketing ideas and clear plans. As India begin a new chapter, many are eager to see how the captain and coach work together.

During a recent interaction at the Mumbai T20 League, Iyer spoke about his approach to leadership and his future as captain.

“Being India captain is a great challenge, but I don’t need to change my personality.” “I have to be the same person I was before,” Iyer said as quoted by PTI.

His comments quickly caught the attention of fans. Many viewed them as a sign that he will continue to trust his own instincts while leading the team.

Interestingly, Iyer and Gambhir have worked together before. They were part of the Delhi IPL setup and later reunited at Kolkata Knight Riders. In the 2024 IPL season, Gambhir served as mentor while Iyer captained the side. Together, they guided KKR to a dominant title-winning campaign.

Now, the duo will aim to recreate that success with India in the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England.
