Shikha Pandey defends Indian players after online abuse following Women’s T20 World Cup loss to South Africa

India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 suffered a setback after a six-wicket defeat against South Africa at Old Trafford in Manchester on Sunday, June 21. The Women in Blue had started their campaign strongly with convincing victories over Pakistan and the Netherlands. However, the loss to the Proteas has made their path to the knockout stage more difficult.

After the disappointing result, several Indian players were targeted by online trolls. The criticism increased on social media as fans expressed frustration over the defeat.

India were in control during the early stages of South Africa’s chase of 159 runs. The Proteas were reduced to 25/2 at the end of the powerplay. However, experienced all-rounder Marizanne Kapp produced a match-winning performance. She remained unbeaten on 81 runs from just 45 balls and guided South Africa to victory.

Shikha Pandey urges fans to avoid online abuse

Indian fast bowler Shikha Pandey came out in support of the players after the match. She said criticism is a part of professional sport but drew a clear line between fair feedback and personal attacks.

“To all those going after the Indian players after today’s loss to South Africa- constructive criticism is fair and necessary but online abuse is not. The difference between the two is immense, and it’s important we don’t blur that line,” Pandey wrote on his official ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) handle.

Despite the defeat, India are still in contention for a semi-final spot. They currently sit second in Group A behind Australia.

However, the qualification race has become more challenging. South Africa are expected to be favourites in their remaining matches against the Netherlands and Bangladesh. If they win both games, they will finish with eight points.

That means India may need victories in both of their remaining group-stage matches. Harmanpreet Kaur and her team will next face Bangladesh on June 25 before taking on Australia in a crucial encounter.

The Women in Blue will be hoping to bounce back quickly and keep their semi-final hopes alive.
