Rishabh Pant Could Be Released by LSG After Stepping Down as Captain

Rishabh Pant’s future with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) appears uncertain. Reports suggest the franchise is seriously considering releasing him ahead of the next IPL mini auction.

The development comes just one day after LSG confirmed that Pant had stepped down as captain. The wicketkeeper-batter reportedly requested the franchise to remove him from the leadership role after two disappointing seasons.

LSG accepted the request and thanked him for his contribution as captain.

Moody added, “Rishabh approached the franchise with this request and we have respectfully accepted it. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective — rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards.”

Poor Results Force LSG to Reconsider

Pant’s record as captain has not been impressive. He led the team in 28 matches and managed only 10 victories. His win percentage was just 35.71.

His batting numbers were also below expectations. Pant scored 581 runs at an average of 26.40 and a strike rate of 135.74 during his captaincy stint.

The 2026 season was especially difficult. LSG finished at the bottom of the points table with only four wins from 14 matches.

According to reports, the franchise’s senior decision-makers, including Justin Langer, Kane Williamson, and Tom Moody, believe Pant’s performances have not justified his massive salary.

Pant currently earns INR 27 crore, making him one of the most expensive players in IPL history. LSG management reportedly feels that the money could be used more effectively to strengthen several areas of the squad.

The possibility of releasing Pant is now said to be “definitely on the table.”

If LSG decide to release him, Pant will become one of the biggest names available in the mini auction. Several franchises could show interest in signing the Indian star.

Meanwhile, LSG are expected to focus on rebuilding the squad and identifying a new captain for the future.
