Mohammed Shami brought his 13-year Test career to an end in November 2026. The Indian fast bowler made his Test debut in November 2013 and went on to become one of India’s most reliable pace options.
Shami represented India in 64 Test matches. He picked up 229 wickets in 122 innings at an average of 27.71 and an economy rate of 3.30. His best bowling figures were 6/56. He also recorded 12 four-wicket hauls and six five-wicket hauls. His final Test appearance came against New Zealand in March 2025.
Former India batter Ajinkya Rahane recently reflected on Shami’s qualities as a bowler and teammate. Speaking on Sony Sports Network, Rahane revealed that Shami was one of the most difficult bowlers to face during net sessions. He also praised the pacer’s confidence and match-winning mentality.
“He was the most dangerous bowler to face in the nets, the way he used to bowl. Amazing seam position. Whenever there was a situation, he used to say he would win the match. This was his attitude always,” Rahane said on Sony Sports Network.
Ajinkya Rahane Wanted Mohammed Shami to Get Another Test Opportunity
Rahane also highlighted Shami’s commitment to Indian cricket. He praised the fast bowler for delivering in important matches despite facing several challenges during his career.
“Whether it’s Tests or ODIs, he has bowled and won matches. He has gone through challenging times, but he has shown commitment and intent by coming to the ground. I would want to say that we were lucky that he was in our team,” Rahane added.
The former India batter also felt Shami deserved another opportunity in Test cricket. He pointed out that the pacer returned to domestic cricket and continued taking wickets in the Ranji Trophy.
“I definitely feel so. He tried as well, especially in Test cricket, considering the way he was playing and bowling. An experienced player who has played so much went back to domestic cricket, gave his all, and did well,” Rahane said.
Rahane also compared Shami’s situation with Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s comeback and hoped to see the experienced pacer represent India once again.
“You cannot expect an experienced player to perform all the time. That’s where experience comes in handy. I was hoping for him to get a chance, just like Bhuvi made a comeback,” he noted.
