Portugal stars defend beach sessions ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026 opener against DR Congo

Portugal’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have come under scrutiny after images emerged showing several players relaxing on the beach in Florida. However, members of the squad have strongly rejected suggestions that they are not taking the tournament seriously. Portugal will begin their World Cup campaign against DR Congo on Wednesday, and players insist their beach visits are an important part of getting ready for the challenging weather conditions they will face throughout the competition.

The squad is based in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where temperatures and humidity levels are significantly different from those experienced by many of the players during the European club season. Portuguese media questioned whether the team’s frequent trips to the beach indicated a relaxed approach to preparation. However, the players have explained that these sessions are carefully planned to help them adapt to the climate before stepping onto the World Cup stage.

Portugal players explain purpose behind beach training routine

Midfielder Matheus Nunes was quick to dismiss criticism surrounding the team’s beach activities. He explained that the visits are a planned part of the preparation process rather than leisure time. According to Nunes, the squad spends time on the beach during the mornings to become familiar with the hot and humid conditions in the United States.

The Manchester City player pointed out that many members of the squad spent most of the year playing in England, where sunny weather is far less common. He said adjusting to the Florida climate is necessary and helps prepare the players physically for matches. Nunes also stressed that the team spends far more time training than relaxing and continues to follow a full schedule of afternoon training sessions.

Photos from Portugal’s training base showed several players enjoying time near the water. Bernardo Silva and Goncalo Guedes were seen walking along the beach, while Ruben Dias also joined teammates outside. Joao Felix and several other squad members took advantage of the resort’s private beach area during downtime between training sessions.

Portugal only arrived in the United States last week, later than many competing nations. While the beach sessions have attracted attention, adapting to their surroundings has not been entirely straightforward. Reports claimed some players were surprised after several alligators were spotted near the team’s training facilities. Although such wildlife is common in Florida, it was an unusual sight for many members of the squad.

The hot weather is expected to play a major role throughout Portugal’s group-stage campaign. After facing DR Congo, they will travel to Houston for a match against Uzbekistan before returning to Miami to play Colombia.

Meanwhile, veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo remains confident ahead of what is expected to be his final World Cup. The 41-year-old said he feels physically strong despite the demanding preparations. He added that the team’s hard work will only be truly measured once the tournament begins and the pressure of World Cup football arrives.
