Indian Pacer Mohammed Shami’s Successful Heel Surgery Raises Questions for IPL 2024 and T20 World Cup Participation

Mohammed Shami, the esteemed Indian and Gujarat Titans (GT) pacer, has undergone a successful surgery on his heel, though the path to full recovery beckons with patience. The decision for Shami to undergo surgery was made known earlier, pinpointing the United Kingdom (UK) as the location for the procedure. Though the news of a successful surgery brings solace to fans, it also signals Shami’s probable absence from both this year’s IPL and the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Taking to social media on Monday, Shami shared images documenting his injury and subsequent surgery, affirming, “Just had a successful heel operation on my achilles tendon! Recovery is going to take some time, but looking forward to getting back on my feet.” Following his surgery, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended wishes for a swift recuperation via Twitter, expressing confidence in Shami’s resilience, stating, “wishing you a speedy recovery and good health, I’m confident you’ll overcome this injury with the courage that is so integral to you.” Mohammed Shami’s Absence in IPL 2024 and T20 World Cup 2024: The necessity of surgical intervention for his injury implies Shami’s likelihood of commencing a regimen of strength and rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Consequently, his participation in forthcoming events appears doubtful at this juncture. Shami’s absence will undoubtedly be keenly felt by his IPL franchise, Gujarat Titans, which basked in significant triumphs during its inaugural seasons. His stellar performance last year earned him the coveted Purple Cap, having clinched 28 wickets in 17 matches. While an official announcement from the Gujarat Titans is pending, anticipation looms, particularly with the schedule for the first half of IPL 2024 already unveiled, and the season primed for commencement on March 22nd.

Mitchell Starc on representing KKR for IPL 2024 as the most expensive player in the tournament

“It was a shock, of course. My wife Alyssa is with the women’s team in India so she was getting updates quicker than what I was seeing on screen. Surprised but thrilled. Our Test squad whatsapp group has been going off to say its our shout to get dinner next. Something to do ahead of the Boxing Day Test. Special night for both of us,” Starc told Star Sports.

“Been a while, yes. I’ve been involved with RCB in 2014-15, then picked up by KKR in 2018 but got injured. But I’ve been prioritising international cricket and Test cricket for Australia. Coming into the back end of this year and next year, it’s much quieter for Australia as a group so excited to be involved. A good chance to play some really competitive T20 cricket in the best T20 league going around with a T20 World Cup coming up,” he added.

“Humbling to still feel like I’m wanted or needed I guess. My gameplay hasn’t changed much across formats except few things here and there. Hopefully the experience can translate to some success. Not too much else to be said,” he said.

During the auction for IPL 2024, the franchises’ squad looked quite balanced as they did not look forward to making massive changes or a lot of new additions. A Remarkable pick by the team during the action was welcoming of the South African bowler Gerald Coetzee for two crores.

Mumbai Indians team on the importance of Rohit Sharma’s guidance

“This is something we have spoken about as a franchise. It is a tough decision, we had to make them. It is emotional, it is tough, to be honest. But everyone who has been part of Mumbai knows we cherish every moment a player has contributed, and will contribute going forward. The legacy is something we want to build on and make sure we keep fighting for those wins, those trophies. As a good unit, we have the skillset to do it. That’s the focus going ahead. Probably everyone in their eyes will think it is too soon, but it is a decision we had to make at some point,” said Mumbai Indians Global Head of Cricket, Mahela Jayawardene. IPL 2024 Auction: CSK Brings back Shardul Thakur in the squad; welcomes local boy Rachin Ravindra

“Having Ro (Rohit Sharma) in the team, on and off the field to guide the next generation is very important for us. He has been absolutely brilliant. I have worked very closely with Ro. He is a fabulous individual and I am sure he will be part of the legacy who will guide that through. Mumbai have had that in the past too with Sachin (Tendulkar), who played with the youngsters. He gave the leadership to someone else and made sure Mumbai Indians was going in the right direction. It’s the same thing. We had this conversation and everyone is buying into that, so, it’s for us to look forward to the next season,” he added.
