MS Dhoni suffers fresh injury setback, CSK await comeback update

There is disappointing news for fans of Chennai Super Kings as head coach Stephen Fleming shared an update on MS Dhoni ahead of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season.

Dhoni was expected to return after recovering from a calf injury. However, the veteran wicketkeeper has suffered another setback. The injury happened during a practice game. This has delayed his comeback further.

Fleming explained the situation clearly. He said, “The calf is a tough one. If he takes off and rips the calf again, then he will be gone [for the whole season]. So we pushed it early. In a warm-up game, he tweaked it again, is my understanding. And since then, he has been just working hard to get some movement into it. But there was a setback,” Fleming was quoted as saying on ESPNcricinfo.

MS Dhoni working hard for return

Despite the setback, there is still hope. Fleming confirmed that Dhoni is working hard behind the scenes. He is focusing on recovery and fitness. The CSK medical team is closely monitoring his progress.

Fleming added, “But look, he’s the guide on this one. And he’s working hard with the physio and doing all the rehab. We’re just waiting for the word, really. But all I can keep saying, it’s not making light of this, he is progressing and doing everything.”

Dhoni has not played competitive cricket since last season. He featured in 14 matches then. At 44, he is near the end of his career. Fans are eager to see him play one last time.

Meanwhile, CSK have had mixed results this season. Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, the team is currently sixth in the points table. They have six points from eight matches. Their form has been inconsistent so far.
