Mohammad Amir Denies Reports of Entering IPL 2027 Auction as British Player

Mohammad Amir has denied reports that he was planning to enter the IPL 2027 auction as a British national. The former Pakistan pacer addressed the speculation on X on Monday, November 2, 2026.

Several reports had claimed that Amir could register for the IPL auction using his British citizenship. The move would have allowed him to enter the league as an overseas player.

“Hi everyone just wanted to clarify news regarding IPL is not true,” Amir stated on X.

The IPL 2027 auction is scheduled for December 16 in Goa. The retention deadline for franchises is November 17. Amir’s clarification has come before both important dates.

Why was Mohammad Amir linked with IPL 2027?

The speculation started after Amir registered for the Afghanistan Premier League draft. The APL draft is scheduled to take place in Dubai on November 3.

Amir was listed in the Platinum category. The United Kingdom was mentioned as his country of residence instead of Pakistan.

This led to reports that he could use the same status to enter the IPL auction. Amir became a British citizen in May 2026 after marrying UK-based lawyer Narjis Khan.

A British passport could potentially allow him to register as an overseas player. Pakistani cricketers have not played in the IPL since the inaugural season in 2008.

Amir had also spoken about the IPL during The Hundred in August. He said at the time that he had not decided whether he would play in the league.

His latest post is his first direct denial of the reports.

There is a precedent for a Pakistan player using British citizenship to play in the IPL. Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood played in the competition between 2012 and 2015. He represented Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Amir last played for Pakistan at the 2024 T20 World Cup. He later stepped away from international cricket.

He remains active in franchise T20 cricket around the world. However, his latest clarification means he will not enter the IPL 2027 auction.

Whether Amir will consider the IPL in a future season remains unknown.
