Glenn Maxwell Retires From International Cricket After 15-Year Australia Career

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 38-year-old made the decision on November 2, 2026, ending a career that included 149 ODIs, 130 T20Is and seven Tests for Australia.

Maxwell, popularly known as ‘The Big Show’, will also step away from domestic 50-over cricket and red-ball cricket for Victoria. His decision brings an end to one of Australia’s most entertaining white-ball careers.

Maxwell had already retired from ODI cricket in June 2025. He continued playing T20 cricket before now confirming his complete retirement from international cricket.

“I’m going to be announcing my retirement from international cricket and domestic games for Victoria in the 50 over and the four-day stuff, red ball ‌completely. There was, I suppose, a small hope or discussion that I might have been able to potentially get a send-off game at the MCG, but I can completely understand the direction they’re going with this squad,” Maxwell said on The Final Word Podcast, as quoted by The Independent.

Why did Glenn Maxwell retire

Maxwell said managing his body was an important reason behind his decision. He wants to remain fit for the franchise T20 tournaments that are still ahead of him.

“It’s probably a time where I probably need to spend a little bit more time investing in the body to make sure I can get through the remaining couple of tournaments I’ve got in my career,” Maxwell said.

The veteran finished his ODI career with 3,990 runs. He scored 2,897 runs in T20Is. He also took 128 wickets across his short-format international career.

Maxwell was part of three World Cup-winning Australian teams. He won the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups and the 2021 T20 World Cup.

His 2023 campaign was especially memorable. He smashed a 40-ball century against the Netherlands and later produced an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan. He came in with Australia at 91 for 7 while chasing 293 and guided them to victory.

Maxwell also became one of only five Australian men’s batters to score international centuries in all three formats.
