Land for Uttarakhand’s first sports college for women identified

Almost 2.5 years after it was declared that a sports college for women would be constructed in Udham Singh Nagar, authorities have identified the land for it and a detailed project report has also been sent to the state government for its acceptance.

The sports college for women, a first in Uttarakhand, is suggested to be constructed on a 65-acre land in Rajpura village of the district’s Kichha town.

The construction is expected to be completed in 2 years. The approximated cost of the project is ₹ 20 crore.

SDM Kichha Kaushtubh Mishra stated, “Identifying a land piece big enough for the college was challenging. After much research, we selected a 65-acre land in the Prag Farm of Rajpura. Besides the sports college, the administration is also planning to build an industrial estate and a modernised jail in the Prag Farm area.”

The statement of the sports college was made in January 2020 by the then chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat. Afterwards, when Pushkar Singh Dhami assumed the office, he directed all sub-divisional magistrates to recognize land for the project.

“The proposed college — to be constructed at ₹ 20 crore — would be the first such college exclusively for women in the hill state.”

“It would have accommodation for 300 sportswomen and they will be trained for sports like hockey, badminton, cricket, judo, and taekwondo, among others,” stated Akhtar Ali, the district sports officer.

He further said, “Girls will be admitted to this college from class VI onwards. Admissions would be made after physical trials and exams. Through this college, the state government aims to bag more medals in national and international championships while empowering the women”.
