IPL 2026 Opener Unlikely to Feature Defending Champions RCB and Runners-Up PBKS

The opening match of the 19th season of the Indian Premier League will not feature both finalists from the 2025 edition. Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and runners-up Punjab Kings will play separate matches during the first two days of the tournament.

Traditionally, the league begins with a high-profile clash. In most seasons, the defending champions play in the opening match. This year could follow that trend. Reports suggest that champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru may face the popular Chennai Super Kings in the curtain-raiser.

According to reports by Brand Finance and Duff & Phelps, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders are among the four biggest marquee teams in the league. These teams attract large fan bases and strong commercial value.

Punjab Kings will start their campaign against Gujarat Titans at their home ground in Mullanpur on March 29. Earlier announcements confirmed that the IPL season will begin on March 28 in Bengaluru.

BCCI secretary gives major update on IPL 2026 schedule

Earlier, it was confirmed that the 19th edition of the IPL will run from March 28 to May 31. This window was slightly revised from the original dates of March 26 to May 30.

However, the complete schedule will not be released at once. The secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Devajit Saikia, said that the schedule for the first 20 days will be announced on Thursday, March 12.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has informed all franchises that the annual meeting with team captains and coaches will take place in Mumbai on March 25. The agenda will be shared later. Usually, important rule changes and updates are discussed during this meeting.

The board also confirmed that the captains’ photoshoot will be held in New Delhi on March 15.

IPL 2026 is expected to be an exciting season. Many teams strengthened their squads during the mini-auction. Teams like Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings had disappointing campaigns last year. Both franchises have made major squad changes as they aim to perform better this season.
