Renowned Indian cricketer and former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament, Gautam Gambhir, has announced his departure from politics to focus on his upcoming cricket commitments. The decision was communicated through a statement Gambhir shared on Twitter on March 2.
Representing East Delhi, Gambhir expressed his decision to his followers and supporters, emphasizing his passion for cricket, a sport he had to set aside upon entering politics. He extended his gratitude to Hon’ble Party President JP Nadda and Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the opportunity to serve the people, stating, “I have requested Hon’ble Party President JP Nadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind.”
Joining the BJP in March 2019, Gambhir swiftly became a prominent figure for the party in Delhi, clinching a significant victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by securing the East Delhi seat with a substantial margin of 6,95,109 votes.
Amidst speculations about his political future and reports hinting that he might not receive a ticket for the upcoming 2024 polls, Gambhir’s decision to step away from politics clears the air regarding his intentions.
Gautam Gambhir is a revered figure in Indian cricket, contributing significantly to India’s World Cup victories in 2007 and 2011. Additionally, he has been a standout performer in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with the 17th season slated to kick off on March 22.
Throughout his cricketing journey, Gambhir has achieved remarkable milestones, accumulating 4,154 runs in 58 Test matches at an impressive average of 41.96 and 5,238 runs in 147 ODIs with an average of 39.68.
Currently serving as the mentor for Shahrukh Khan’s IPL team, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), alongside his successful stint as a commentator, Gambhir’s decision underscores his unwavering dedication to the sport that has been integral to his life.
As Gambhir embarks on this new phase, his contributions to both cricket and public service remain indelible in the realms of Indian sports and politics.
