Chennai Super Kings have brought Albie Morkel back into their setup ahead of IPL 2027. The franchise has appointed the former South African allrounder as its assistant coach.
The 45-year-old will join CSK’s revamped coaching team. The setup is now led by Zaheer Khan as the franchise looks to win a record sixth IPL title.
Morkel has a strong connection with CSK. He was part of the franchise from the first IPL season in 2008. He played for the team until 2013 and featured in 92 matches.
During his time with CSK, Morkel played an important role in the team’s success. He was part of the squads that won consecutive IPL titles in 2010 and 2011. He also featured in CSK’s Champions League T20 triumph in 2010.
CSK welcomed Morkel back with a post on X.
“The lion behind some of Chepauk’s most unforgettable moments is ready for a new innings! 💛 An OG Super King from 2008, a key member of our back-to-back IPL triumphs in 2010 and 2011! Albie Morkel’s story with the Super Kings continues! Welcome aboard, Albie!,” the franchise wrote on X.
Morkel Joins a New-Look CSK Coaching Team
Morkel has also been building his coaching career in franchise cricket. In July 2026, he became the head coach of Joburg Super Kings in the SA20.
He took over from Stephen Fleming after the former CSK coach stepped down from the role. His move to CSK now sees him return to a franchise he knows well, but in an assistant coach role.
Morkel will work alongside Gareth Batty, who has also joined CSK as an assistant coach after leaving his position as Surrey head coach.
Former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma has been appointed as the new bowling coach. James Foster will continue as fielding coach, while Sridharan Sriram will remain an assistant coach.
The new coaching group will now focus on preparing for the IPL 2027 mini-auction. CSK must first finalise its player retention list before the auction in December. The decisions will shape the squad that Zaheer Khan and his coaching team will work with next season.
