Indian batter Shreyas Iyer suffered a left rib cage injury while fielding during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, October 25.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the update on their official social media accounts. The statement mentioned that Shreyas was taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury.
Shreyas Iyer Injured While Taking a Brilliant Catch in Sydney ODI
The incident took place in the 34th over of Australia’s innings. Harshit Rana bowled a back-of-a-length delivery to Alex Carey. The Australian wicketkeeper-batter tried to go over mid-off but ended up slicing the ball high in the air.
Shreyas, positioned at backward point, turned around and sprinted back. He timed his jump perfectly and completed a stunning catch, making sure the ball didn’t slip out of his hands.
It was a big breakthrough for India as Shreyas’ brilliant effort ended a 59-run fourth-wicket stand, which was setting up Australia for a strong finish. However, as he landed, Shreyas fell awkwardly and appeared to be in serious pain.
The team physio rushed onto the field to check on him. During the drinks break, Shreyas was taken off the field for medical attention.
His participation in the second innings looked uncertain. India were chasing 237 runs and lost captain Shubman Gill in the 11th over. But Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma took charge and guided India to a comfortable win.
