Atlético grab last-16 spot from Porto in raging finale

Atlético Madrid grabbed a place in the Champions League last-16 as they triumphed 3-1 at Porto in a furious game in which both sides had men sent off of the field.

Griezmann put Atlético in front in opposition to the run of play in the 56th minute, furling the ball into the net following a corner after the hosts had missed a plethora of clear chances either side of the break.

The dominance was menaced when Yannick Carrasco was sent off of the field in the 67th minute for raising his hands to Otávio as rampage following a foul but Porto’s numerical upper hand lasted only a few moments as Wendell was released for appearing to lightly hit Matheus Cunha with his elbow.

Substitute Ángel Correa secured the victory for Atlético with a hard-hearted finish on the counterattack in the 90th minute, prior Rodrigo De Paul appended a third goal 60 seconds later. Porto then pocketed a consolation penalty which Sérgio Oliveira transformed with the final kick of the game.

Diego Simeone’s Atléti side commenced the game bottom of Group B but concluded it second on seven points, Porto coming third with five and qualifying for the Europa League.

Liverpool ended top with 18 points after winning 2-1 at Milan.
