Netherlands smashed Belgium in Nations League

Netherlands got their Nations League campaign end to a magnificent start with an easy 4-1 victory over Belgium in Brussels.

Louis van Gaal kept his 5-3-2 formation for the Nations League opener with Jasper Cillessen in goal, whilst Jurrien Timber and Nathan Ake allied Virgil van Dijk in defence.

Frenkie de Jong, Davy Klaassen and Steven Berghuis made the midfield, whilst Steven Bergwijn associated Memphis up top.

Belgium produced the first big chance with Castagne smashing the crossbar from close range, but after that, Netherlands dominated.

The pressing in midfield forced errors and Berghuis found himself in on goal but his effort was kept out by Simon Mignolet.

Memphis, Daley Blind, and Steven Bergwijn all lost good chances ahead of Oranje did take the lead in the 40th minute.

Bergwijn then fired a strong strike past Mignolet from outside the box.

Before the half-time, Netherlands were given a penalty for a handball, however VAR came in between and the decision was reversed.

Six minutes into the second half, Klaassen fetched the ball, and set up Berghuis to play a marvellous ball through for Memphis. The attacker rushed into the box ahead of lifting Netherlands 2-0.

Ten minutes later, Blind crossed for Denzel Dumfries to make it 3-0 following Mignolet haulted a Berghuis shot.

Netherlands were fierce and it was quickly 4-0 as a long ball from Van Dijk was then netted by the striker.

It was Netherlands first victory over Belgium since 1997 and they take control of the Nations League group.

Next, is a clash to Wales on Wednesday.
