Bundesliga Match dismissed following Assistant Ref got hit on Head with Beer Cup

The Bundesliga game between Bochum and Borussia Moenchengladbach was dismissed on Friday following the assistant referee was hit on the head by a beer cup thrown from the crowds.

Gladbach had been ruling 2-0 at Bochum after second half goals from Alassane Plea and Breel Embolo when the game was held up after 71 minutes when linesman Christian Gittelmann was attacked on head.

The referee took the decision to terminate the match for good after 20 minutes. Both clubs right away took to social media to criticize the incident.

“We can only formally apologise to linesman Christian Gittelmann,” Bochum cited on social media.

“A highly embarrassing and bitter evening for us. An extremely stupid action from an idiotic fan.”

Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus further said: “Things like this should never happen. It angers you when a good game of football has to end like this.”

Bochum had been at 11th spot in the table, two points ahead of Gladbach, in 13th position, prior Friday’s game.
