The BCCI is set to discuss the associate membership request of the Cricket Association of Andaman and Nicobar (CAAN) at its Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on September 18, 2026.
CAAN is currently not affiliated with the BCCI. The upcoming AGM could mark a major step towards changing that status.
The matter dates back to 2025. The Bombay High Court had directed the BCCI to consider CAAN’s affiliation request within four weeks. The direction was linked to an Apex Council meeting held on September 22, 2025.
Following the court order, the BCCI formed a three-member committee. It was asked to examine CAAN’s request. The committee included BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, joint secretary and later treasurer Prabhtej Bhatia, and Apex Council member M Khairul Jamal Majumdar.
Andaman and Nicobar consists of 836 islands and islets across the Bay of Bengal. If CAAN gets BCCI affiliation, cricket administration in the union territory will come under the national board’s system.
Several Key Matters on AGM Agenda
The CAAN issue is one of several important matters listed for the September 18 AGM.
Members will vote on the election of the IPL General Council’s general body. They will also consider the appointment of BCCI representatives to the International Cricket Council.
The induction of an Indian Cricketers’ Association representative into the IPL Governing Council is also on the agenda.
The BCCI will further discuss the appointment of its Ombudsman and Ethics Officer. The formation of standing committees will also be considered.
Meanwhile, the board has invited applications for five positions on its junior cricket committee.
“Promoting strong ethical values among young cricketers, including awareness around issues such as drugs, betting and match-fixing, through interactions with senior and former players” reads one of the key responsibilities for the appointment of junior committee selectors.
The outgoing committee, led by S Sharath, oversaw three Under-19 World Cups. India won two titles and finished runners-up once during its tenure.
