South African batter Heinrich Klaasen has explained how retiring from international cricket has changed his career. The decision has given him more time to rest and prepare between franchise tournaments.
Klaasen announced his international retirement on June 2, 2025. He ended a seven-year international career. He played four Tests, 60 ODIs and 58 T20Is for South Africa.
His final international match came in the Champions Trophy semi-final against New Zealand in Lahore in March 2025.
Since retiring, Klaasen has focused on domestic and franchise cricket. He said the change has allowed him to manage his workload better.
“Retiring from international cricket gave me the freedom to have a break in between these competitions. For the majority of these competitions, I’ve got about a month, a month and a half, or two months off in between. So that gives me enough time to just reset, take everything in, work on the things that need to be worked on, and just get the body ready for the next tournament.” Klaasen said on JioStar.
Klaasen Targets More Trophies
Klaasen has continued to produce strong numbers in franchise cricket. He scored 624 runs in 15 innings during IPL 2026. He also hit six fifties.
His form continued in The Hundred 2026. He scored 166 runs in seven innings. He averaged 23.71 and had a strike rate of 182.41. He also registered two fifties.
Klaasen is representing Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred. The team faced Trent Rockets in the Men’s Hundred final on August 16.
The batter admitted that playing fewer matches can also create challenges. He wants to maintain his standards while targeting team success.
“Winning trophies is one goal. It has been a lean run on the trophies, so the personal goal is to get into, and get the team into positions to win trophies. Then, obviously, a big challenge now, playing less cricket, is to keep the quality of cricket up. I had a good IPL (624 runs in 15 innings with six fifties); I have had a good start to The Hundred, it was a little bit silent in the middle, but the key was to get some runs under the belt and keep my standard up to what it normally is,” Klaasen said.
Klaasen will now look to continue his franchise career while chasing more trophies.
