Rumours about former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin becoming England’s next Test head coach have been spreading widely on social media. The speculation started after Brendon McCullum stepped down as England’s red-ball coach. However, McCullum will continue to lead the team’s ODI and T20I sides.
With England now searching for a new Test coach, several names have been linked with the role. Ashwin’s name also began trending after unverified social media posts claimed that he had met England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) officials in the United States to discuss the job.
No evidence linking Ashwin with England coaching role
Despite the online buzz, there is no credible report that Ashwin is in talks with the ECB. Reports suggesting that he met England officials regarding the Test coaching role are false.
The meetings mentioned in the rumours were reportedly related to commercial discussions involving the upcoming European T20 Premier League. They had no connection with England’s coaching setup.
According to reports, sources close to the ECB have dismissed the speculation. They have stated that the board has not contacted Ashwin and has held no discussions with him about becoming England’s next Test head coach.
Meanwhile, Ashwin has remained busy with his digital platforms. The former India spinner has been regularly sharing his analysis of India’s ongoing Test tour of England.
While Ashwin’s name continues to circulate online, other candidates are believed to be ahead in the race. Former England head coach Andy Flower is reportedly the leading contender for the position. Flower previously guided England to the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test rankings and is said to be interested in returning if he can continue his IPL role with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
England Lions coach Andrew Flintoff and former Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott are also among the reported candidates.
As of now, there is no verified link between Ashwin and England’s vacant Test coaching role. England are expected to appoint a new Test head coach before their upcoming home Test series against Pakistan, with the Ashes also approaching later in the season.
