LPL 2026 Introduces Impact Player Rule and U-23 Requirement

The 2026 season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will see two major rule changes. The tournament will introduce the Impact Player rule for the first time. It will also make it compulsory for teams to include at least one under-23 player in their playing XI.

The decision was taken after a meeting between the five franchises on June 1. All teams agreed to bring the new rules into the competition.

Under the Impact Player rule, teams will announce their playing XI and a list of substitute options before the match. During the game, one player from the starting XI can be replaced by a player from the bench. Only one such substitution will be allowed in a match.

The rule was first used in India’s domestic T20 competition, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, in 2022. It was later introduced in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2023. Since then, the rule has received mixed reactions. Some players and experts believe it adds flexibility to teams. Others feel it reduces the value of all-rounders. There have also been reports that the IPL may remove the rule in the future.

Teams Must Include One Young Player

Apart from the Impact Player rule, every franchise will now have to field at least one player under the age of 23 in every match. The player must be born on or after July 1, 2003.

The new rules come shortly after another controversial proposal from the league. Earlier, players were asked to meet a minimum Instagram follower requirement to take part in the tournament. The proposal faced strong criticism from fans and cricket experts. Many believed players should be selected based on cricketing ability rather than social media popularity. Following the backlash, Sri Lanka Cricket withdrew the requirement.

LPL 2026 is scheduled to begin on July 17. The opening match will be played between Galle Gallants and SC Jaffna Kings.
