Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ended India’s ODI series in Australia on a high note. The two senior stars guided India to a nine-wicket win in the third and final 50-over match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.
The packed crowd witnessed a brilliant chase as India comfortably crossed the finish line. Rohit and Kohli stitched an unbroken partnership of 168 runs for the second wicket, marking their 19th century stand in ODIs. Rohit played a captain’s knock of 121 not out, while Kohli stayed unbeaten on 74 at the other end. Their calm and experienced approach helped India dominate the chase with ease.
Despite their heroics, questions still remain about their future in international cricket. Both players are currently only active in the 50-over format and have not featured in T20Is or Tests recently.
Shubman Gill on Rohit-Kohli’s Future Plans
After the match, India’s newly appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill was asked if he had spoken to Rohit and Kohli about the long break before India’s next ODI series. The next assignment for India is the South Africa ODIs, starting at the end of November, followed by a seven-week gap before the New Zealand series.
Gill said there has been no discussion so far.
“We haven’t talked about it yet. But I think once South Africa (ODI) series is over (on December 6), there will be a gap in international cricket before the New Zealand ODI series (January 11, 2026). So I think then we will see how to keep the players in touch. Then I think a decision will be taken,” Gill said at the post-match press conference.
What’s Next for Rohit and Kohli?
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will next play in the three-match ODI series against South Africa. The matches are scheduled for November 30, December 3, and December 6.
After that, India will face New Zealand in another 50-over series beginning on January 11, 2026.
Before that, both players are expected to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which starts on December 24. They may feature in a few matches for their respective domestic teams to stay in touch with the game.
