India and West Indies locked horns during the 1st T20 at the famed Eden Gardens at Kolkata. The Indian side beat the visitors by 6 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the series. India who beat the West Indies 3-0 in the ODI series were taken home to a win by Suryakumar Yadav in the dying stages of the game.
The story as it happened –
India won the toss and put the opposition into bat. The visitors posted 157 on the board. Chasing 158 to win Rohit Sharma gave the Indian team a blazing start along with Ishan Kishan. The duo managed to zip past 50 runs in the first 5 overs. Then there were a flurry of wickets which fell. That’s when Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer came together and saw the team through. With India needing 19 from 3 overs, the stump mic picked SKY saying to Iyer “Venky, tujhe match jeetana hai” which means Venky you have to take us over the line. The words seemed to have worked as Iyer was not out on 24 of 13 balls with 2 fours and a six. Yadav on the other hand score a quick fire 30 odd off just 18 balls.
Bishnoi shines on debut –
Young leggie from Rajasthan Ravi Bishnoi became the 95th player for India to play in this format. Bishnoi was handed his India cap by Yuzvendra Chahal his leg spin senior compatriot. In his 2nd over he picked the wickets of Chase and Powell and finished with an impressive figures of 2/17 from his 4 overs.
Kohli and Pant fail yet again –
Meanwhile the batting woes of Virat Kohli doesn’t seem to end. The former captain was out for 17 of 13 falling to Fabien Allen caught by Pollard. Pant too feel for a single digit score trying to scoop a delivery off Cottrell only to be caught at fine leg by Odeon Smith.
The 2nd game of the series will be played on Friday at Eden Gardens with the final match at the same venue on Sunday.
