Kolkata Knight Riders have made a big addition to their support staff. Tim Southee has been named the bowling coach for IPL 2026. The former New Zealand captain retired from international cricket earlier in 2025. He was recently part of England’s Test setup as a bowling consultant. His arrival adds more experience to a new-look KKR coaching group.
Tim Southee joins revamped KKR Management for IPL 2026
Tim Southee joins a coaching team that has changed a lot ahead of IPL 2026. Abhishek Nayar is now the head coach. The franchise also added Shane Watson as assistant coach. KKR hopes that this new structure will help them perform better in the next season.
There is also a sense of comfort in Southee’s appointment. The 36-year-old has played for KKR before. He represented the team in the 2021, 2022 and 2023 seasons. His experience with the franchise makes the move feel natural for both sides. During his long career, Southee took more than 700 international wickets across formats.
He also played over 100 Tests for New Zealand. He was part of some of New Zealand’s biggest moments. He featured in the team’s run to the 2019 ODI World Cup final. Southee also played a key role in their World Test Championship victory in 2021. These achievements make him one of New Zealand’s most respected fast bowlers. KKR believes that Southee’s experience will be extremely valuable.
CEO Venky Mysore welcomed him warmly. He said, “We are delighted to welcome Tim Southee back to the KKR family, this time in a coaching capacity,” CEO Venky Mysore said. “Tim’s vast experience and technical expertise will be instrumental in shaping our bowling unit. His leadership qualities and calm approach make him an ideal mentor for our young bowlers.”
Southee also shared his excitement about returning to Kolkata. He said that the franchise has always been special to him.
“KKR has always felt like home to me, and it’s an honour to return in this new role. The franchise has an incredible culture, passionate fans, and a great group of players. I look forward to working closely with the bowlers and helping the team achieve success in IPL 2026.”
With Southee joining the staff, KKR hopes to build a stronger bowling unit. The team will aim for a successful IPL 2026 campaign with their refreshed coaching setup.
