Shreyas Iyer Likely to Return for Asia Cup 2025 and West Indies Tests

Shreyas Iyer could soon make a strong comeback to the Indian cricket team. He was not part of the recent England tour but with the Asia Cup 2025 and the West Indies Test series coming up, selectors are planning to bring him back.

The Asia Cup 2025 will begin on September 9 in the UAE. It will be played in the T20 format. The squad for the tournament is expected to be announced later this month. Iyer is being looked at for a key role in India’s middle order.

A Comeback in All Formats on Cards For Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer is already part of the ODI team. Now, the selectors are thinking about including him in both the T20I and Test squads. This move is part of a plan to make India’s middle order stronger. His calm presence and experience, especially against spin, is seen as a big advantage.

A BCCI source told the media that Iyer’s absence was felt in the England series. India struggled in the middle overs, especially when facing spin. The selectors believe Iyer’s return could fix that problem.

India will play two Test matches against the West Indies in October. The first Test will be held in Ahmedabad on October 2. After that, India will play two more Tests against South Africa at home.

Iyer has been named in the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy 2025. The matches will be held at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence from August 28. West Zone will start their campaign in the semifinals on September 4.

Iyer last played a Test in February 2024. A back injury and poor form led to his exclusion. He also lost his central contract for not playing domestic cricket. But now he is focused and fit again.

Earlier this year, Iyer helped India win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He scored 243 runs in five games. He also had a good Ranji Trophy season, scoring 480 runs with two centuries.

Iyer has 811 runs in 14 Tests, 2845 runs in 70 ODIs, and 1104 runs in 51 T20Is.
