Shreyas Iyer Admitted to ICU After Serious Injury During Third ODI Against Australia

In a shocking development for Indian cricket fans, ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the ICU of a Sydney hospital after suffering a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia. Reports say Iyer has been in intensive care for the past two days as doctors monitor his recovery from a life-threatening internal injury.

The incident took place when Iyer took a brilliant running catch to dismiss Alex Carey. While completing the catch, he fell awkwardly on his left rib cage, which caused severe pain. After returning to the dressing room, his condition got worse, and medical staff quickly rushed him to the hospital.

Doctors later confirmed that Iyer had dangerously low vitals and was suffering from internal bleeding, making the situation critical.

BCCI Gives Update on Shreyas Iyer’s Condition

A source told PTI that medical scans showed internal bleeding near his ribs. As a result, he was immediately admitted to the ICU for close observation.

“He will stay under watch for anywhere between two to seven days, depending on how quickly the bleeding stops and if there’s any risk of infection,” the source added.

In the latest update, the BCCI released an official statement on Shreyas Iyer’s condition.

“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” BCCI stated in a press release.

The 30-year-old batsman has been in good form recently. He scored 61 runs in the second ODI in Adelaide and was only 83 runs short of completing 3000 ODI runs before the injury.

Iyer has mainly focused on ODIs this year after taking a break from Test cricket due to a back issue.

India’s next ODI series is set to begin against South Africa on November 30 in Ranchi. However, it remains uncertain whether Shreyas Iyer will recover in time to be part of the squad.
