Sanju Samson Likely to Replace unwell Abhishek Sharma in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Clash vs Namibia

India opener and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is likely to play in the T20 World Cup match against Namibia in New Delhi on Thursday. Star batter Abhishek Sharma is still recovering from a stomach infection. His illness has put his participation in serious doubt.

Abhishek was hospitalised after the Indian team reached Delhi. He has now been discharged. However, the food poisoning will need a few more days of recovery. Because of this, the team management does not want to take a risk with his fitness.

If Abhishek does not get fit in time, Samson will return to the playing XI. It could be a big opportunity for him. He earlier lost his place to Ishan Kishan due to poor form. This match could help him restart his international career.

Samson has been preparing hard. He was seen batting for long periods in the nets. He even faced fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah during practice. The coaching staff closely watched his training sessions.

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate also spoke about Samson’s role in the team.

“Look, at this level, you need to be honest and transparent. And the way the cards have fallen, Sanju’s had all the support that he could possibly have had. He went through that phase where we tried him in the middle order, and then he obviously had the reprieve where he came back,” ten Doeschate was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

“And now it’s just getting Sanju feeling well within himself again, understanding where he fits into the scheme of things now: A, as an injury replacement, B, as a form replacement. You’re not going to have any hassles with Sanju – solid guy, he’s good around the group, he’s training well, he’s a good vibe around the group, and that’s what we expect from everyone in the team,” he concluded.

Washington Sundar Also in Opening Plans

Washington Sundar is also being considered as an opening option. This comes after Ishan Kishan took a blow during a net session before the match. Kishan returned to practice after treatment, but the team does not want to risk a bigger injury during the long tournament.
