Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid down the foundation stone for the international cricket stadium, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The Varanasi Stadium will be the third international cricket stadium in UP after Lucknow and Kanpur. As revealed by the state’s chief minister, the project is expected to be budgeted at ₹451 crores.
Former cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, and Dilip Vengsarkar also marked their presence at the event. Sachin Tendulkar also gave Prime Minister Narendra Modi an Indian cricket team jersey no.1 with his name “NAMO”.
The UP government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has acquired the stadium’s land for ₹121 crores, and the BCCI will spend ₹331 crores on the construction of the stadium that can seat approximately 30,000 spectators.

“PM Modi is laying the foundation stone for International Cricket Stadium Varanasi by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Uttar Pradesh for the first time. I welcome PM Modi on behalf of every sports enthusiast in the state”, said Yogi Adityanath, CM UP.
“In Varanasi, a stadium is under construction with the help of the Smart City Mission of the Central Government. This is the third International stadium of Uttar Pradesh and the first to be constructed under the supervision of BCCI. It will provide a platform to the cricket enthusiasts of east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. I would like to thank BCCI and PM Modi for giving this gift to UP,” said the chief minister.
