“Not Fair on Franchises”: Sunil Gavaskar Slams Part-Time Availability in IPL

Former India batter Sunil Gavaskar has raised serious concerns over players not fulfilling their roles in the Indian Premier League. He has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India to introduce a strict rule against such cases.

The issue came into focus after Cameron Green was not allowed to bowl by Cricket Australia while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders.

Gavaskar believes this is unfair to franchises. He said players who are not fully fit should withdraw before the tournament begins. This would allow teams to sign proper replacements.

Sunil Gavaskar demads full commitment from players in IPL 2026

Sunil Gavaskar did not hold back in his criticism. He stressed that franchises deserve complete commitment from players they invest in.

“A bowler can bowl only four overs in a match… what is stopping them from doing so in the game? It is only fair that a player not fit from day one should withdraw and give the franchise the chance to pick someone else. To suggest that the franchise was ‘informed before’ is not a great excuse. Maybe the BCCI needs to step in and… introduce something similar for players who are not available from the first game. Don’t the franchises… deserve full commitment?”

Green is not the only player facing such restrictions. Mitchell Marsh and Cooper Connolly have also not been cleared to play as all-rounders.

KKR spent INR 25.20 crore to sign Green in the latest auction. He was seen as a replacement for Andre Russell.

However, Green has struggled so far. He has scored only 24 runs in three matches. He has also not bowled a single over yet.
