New Zealand Crush South Africa to Reach T20 World Cup 2026 Final, Aiden Markram calls loss as “unfortunate night”

New Zealand national cricket team produced a dominant performance to defeat South Africa national cricket team in the first semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The match took place on Wednesday, March 4. New Zealand secured a massive nine-wicket victory to book their place in the final.

South Africa had been unbeaten in the tournament before this match. However, their impressive run came to an end against a strong New Zealand side.

Batting first, the South Africa national cricket team scored 169 for 8 in their 20 overs. Captain Aiden Markram later admitted that the total was not enough on a good batting pitch.

“We’ll reflect as a group. We expected the wicket to play really well. It looked pretty good to the eye. So, potentially just adapt a bit quicker with the bat and go back to a little bit more of an old-school approach, set it up and try to scrap your way to 190, and maybe you’ll be in the game from there. So, yeah, we’ll reflect as a group. Obviously, disappointed with the result, but very proud of this group of guys. They played some really good cricket throughout this competition, and it was just an unfortunate evening, really,” Markram said at the post-match presentation.

New Zealand Dominate the Chase Against South Africa

Finn Allen and Tim Seifert gave New Zealand a flying start in the chase. The duo attacked the bowlers from the first over.

Allen played a stunning knock of 100 not out off just 33 balls. Seifert also impressed with 58 runs from 33 deliveries. Their aggressive batting completely took the game away from South Africa.

New Zealand raced to the target in only 12.5 overs. They finished the match with nine wickets in hand.

Markram also praised the New Zealand bowling attack for putting pressure on his team early in the game.

“They bowled really well upfront. The ball didn’t quite feel like it was coming on; some were just stopping in the wickets, some were hitting quite low on the bat, and they made scoring really tough. And then through that, pressure builds and you lose wickets, unfortunately. So give credit to that bowling unit,” Markram concluded.

New Zealand will now play the final on Sunday in Ahmedabad.
