Legendary Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from T20 International cricket. The 35-year-old made the decision to focus on Test and ODI cricket in the final years of his career.
Starc last played a T20I during the 2024 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. He has now decided to step away from the format, just six months before the next edition of the tournament in India and Sri Lanka.
The left-arm pacer finishes as Australia’s second-highest wicket taker in T20Is. Only leg-spinner Adam Zampa has more. Starc took 79 wickets from 65 matches at an economy rate of 7.74. He made his debut in 2012 against Pakistan.
Starc played in five of the six T20 World Cups held so far. He missed only the 2016 edition because of injury. His most memorable moment came in 2021 when Australia won the T20 World Cup in Dubai. Starc was a key part of the winning squad.
Mitchell Starc To Continue Focus on Tests and ODIs for Australia
Starc confirmed that he will continue to play in Test cricket, ODIs, the Indian Premier League and domestic games. He said Test cricket has always been his top priority.

“I have loved every T20I for Australia,” Starc said in a statement. “The 2021 World Cup was very special. Looking ahead, I want to stay fresh and fit for the Indian Test tour, the Ashes and the 2027 ODI World Cup.”
The retirement is part of a larger change in Australian cricket. David Warner retired from all formats last year. Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis have also stepped away from ODIs recently.
Chair of selectors George Bailey praised Starc. “He should be proud of his T20 career. He was a big part of our 2021 win. His ability to take wickets at key moments changed games,” Bailey said.
While his T20I journey is over, Starc remains committed to serving Australia in Tests and ODIs. His next goal is to stay at his best for the major tours and tournaments ahead.
