Kevin Pietersen Steps Down as Delhi Capitals Mentor Ahead of Indian Premier League 2026

Days before the start of the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), former England batter Kevin Pietersen has stepped down from his role as mentor of the Delhi Capitals.

Pietersen worked with the Delhi-based franchise last season as part of the support staff. During the campaign, he developed a strong connection with several players in the squad. This included India star KL Rahul and young batter Ashutosh Sharma.

The former England captain was often seen celebrating with players after important performances. His presence in the dressing room added experience and guidance for the younger members of the squad.

However, Pietersen announced his decision on X, formerly known as Twitter. His statement came just two weeks before the new IPL season begins.

Delhi Capitals are scheduled to start their campaign on April 1 against the Lucknow Super Giants.

Pietersen cites time commitment for decision

In his short social media message, Pietersen explained that he would not be able to commit the time required for the role this season. At the same time, he wished the Delhi Capitals players the very best for the upcoming tournament.

“I cannot be a mentor for Delhi Capitals in this IPL season. I cannot commit to the time that the job requires. Best wishes to all the players for this season! However, I’ll see you back in the commentary box! IPL is the world’s best league and I can’t wait to see all of you soon!”

Pietersen also confirmed that he will return to his role as a television commentator during the IPL.

The 45-year-old has a long history with the Delhi franchise. He played for the team when it was known as the Delhi Daredevils. Pietersen represented the side in the 2012 and 2014 seasons. In those two campaigns, he scored 599 runs in 19 matches.

For the upcoming season, former India cricketer Hemang Badani will serve as the head coach. Former England batter Ian Bell will be the assistant coach. Meanwhile, ex-India pacer Munaf Patel continues as the bowling coach.

Delhi Capitals finished fifth in the IPL last season. They missed the playoffs by just one point. The team will now aim to improve its performance in the 2026 edition.
