ISL 2026: Mohun Bagan Start Strong, Chhetri Makes History as New Season Begins

The Indian Super League 2026 season has finally started after a long wait of more than ten months. Fans were eager to see football return. The opening matches gave plenty of talking points across the league.

Many teams looked rusty in the first round. Players did not get a proper pre-season training camp. For months, there was uncertainty about whether the league would even take place. Because of that, fitness levels and match sharpness were not at their best. Teams are expected to improve over the next few weeks.

Early results and standout performers

Mohun Bagan began the season in familiar style. They won their opening match comfortably and kept a clean sheet. Under coach Sergio Lobera, results matter most and they delivered again. Jamie Maclaren scored early in the campaign, while Robinho looked dangerous on the wing. The squad depth is also strong, with Jason Cummings available from the bench. Once again, they look like title favourites.

Kerala Blasters struggled in the same game. They showed effort but created few clear chances. The absence of Vibin Mohanan in the starting lineup hurt their control in midfield. Substitute Kévin Yoke impressed late, but the team could not recover.

Bengaluru FC also made a winning start. More than 12,000 fans attended the home match at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. Goals from Sivasakthi Narayanan and Sunil Chhetri secured a 2-0 victory over SC Delhi. Chhetri created history by becoming the oldest player to score in the ISL at 41.

Jamshedpur FC looked exciting under Owen Coyle. Madih Talal scored the winner against Mohammedan SC after an assist from Pronay Halder. With players like Ritwik Das and Mohammed Sanan, they could be dark horses this season.

East Bengal also impressed. Youssef Ejjezzari scored twice and Miguel Ferreira added another goal against NorthEast United. Their strong start puts them among the early contenders for the league title.
