The Indian Premier League (IPL) continues to be the biggest money-maker for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In the financial year 2023-24, IPL alone gave 59% of the board’s total income. Because of this, experts are calling it the “golden goose” of Indian cricket.
According to The Hindu Business Line, quoting Rediffusion, BCCI made ₹9,741.7 crore in total revenue in FY 2023-24. Out of this, ₹5,761 crore came from the IPL. That’s more than half of BCCI’s total earnings.
The IPL began in 2007 and has grown every year. It is now the world’s most popular T20 cricket league. Top Indian and foreign players take part every season. The tournament draws millions of fans, both online and in stadiums.
IPL Called a “Golden Goose”
Lloyd Mathias, a business strategist and independent director, said, “BCCI in 2007 discovered a golden goose – the IPL which is now a 100 per cent part of the BCCI. The tournament is the best and media rights are constantly going up. IPL also ensures that players from Ranji Trophy-level get a playing field. IPL will continue to churn out profitability as it grows further.”
Other Revenue Sources for BCCI
Besides IPL, the BCCI also made ₹361 crore from non-IPL media rights. This includes earnings from international matches. However, experts say there is much more scope to grow this part of the income. Sandeep Goyal, Chief of Rediffusion, said,

“BCCI has immense potential to commercialise traditional formats like Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, or CK Nayudu Trophy to shore up non-IPL revenues.” He also said the BCCI has nearly ₹30,000 crore in reserves.
“The board has close to ₹30,000 crore in reserves, which brings in about ₹1,000 crore a year in interest alone. These revenues aren’t just sustainable – they are poised to grow 10-12 per cent annually, thanks to expanding sponsorships, media deals, and matchday earnings.” The report said the ICC depends heavily on the BCCI for its own income.
