There seems to be a big change in plans for the IPL 2026 auction. The event, which was earlier expected to be held in India, is now likely to take place overseas. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not officially informed the franchises, they have reportedly been given a hint about the move.
Gulf Region Emerges as Top Choice for IPL 2026 Auction
The Gulf region has become the frontrunner to host the IPL 2026 auction. Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is currently leading the race, but Oman and Qatar are also being considered as possible venues.
This move marks a shift from the BCCI’s earlier plan to hold the auction in India. However, logistical problems, including difficulties in finding a suitable venue during the busy festival and wedding season, have made the board look abroad once again.
As per reports from Cricbuzz, the IPL 2026 auction is likely to be held in mid-December, most probably in the second half of the month. The BCCI is expected to make an official announcement about the date and venue before November 15 the deadline for teams to submit their player retention and release lists.
Intense Discussions Over Player Retentions and Trades
With the retention deadline approaching fast, discussions across franchises have gained momentum. The biggest topic of conversation right now is the possible trade of Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson.
Several franchises continue to rate Samson highly despite his inconsistent form in international cricket. His strong IPL record keeps him in demand. The latest updates on his trade situation are expected soon, as Rajasthan Royals’ lead owner Manoj Badale is set to arrive in Mumbai on Tuesday. His visit will be key to finalising major retention calls, including those of Sri Lankan players Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga.

Meanwhile, there are also talks about Mohammed Shami’s future. Sunrisers Hyderabad have reportedly received trade offers for the India pacer but are reluctant to let him go. At the same time, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and possibly Kolkata Knight Riders are expected to make multiple releases to free up funds before the IPL 2026 auction.
