India Fined for Slow Over-Rate in Third Women’s ODI Against Australia

India have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee for a slow over-rate in the third Women’s ODI against Australia in New Delhi. The fine was confirmed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after the match.

Match referee G.S. Lakshmi, from the Emirates ICC International Panel, imposed the sanction. India were found to be two overs short of the target. This was after taking into account the time allowances given to the fielding side.

According to the ICC rules, teams must maintain the required over-rate in all matches. Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct explains this clearly. It states that players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over that is not bowled on time. Since India were short by two overs, the fine came to 10 per cent.

India Women’s Captain Harmanpreet Kaur Accepted the Penalty

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur accepted the charge. She also agreed to the proposed penalty. Because of this, there was no need for a formal hearing.

The slow over-rate was reported by the match officials. On-field umpires Lauren Agenbag and Janani Narayanan raised the issue. They were supported by third umpire Gayathri Venugopalan and fourth umpire Vrinda Rathi.

This is not the first time a team has been fined for slow over-rates. The ICC has made it clear that it wants games to move at the right speed. Slow over-rates can delay matches and spoil the viewing experience for fans.
