A Spanish court said, former Cameroon forward Samuel Eto’o has been given a suspended prison sentence in Spain for tax fraud for the time he featured for Barcelona.
In an agreement with tax authorities, Eto’o got a 22-month prison sentence and will repay nearly €4 million ($4.2 million) in taxes owed.
He evaded serving time because in Spain sentences shorter than 2 years can be suspended for first-time offenders.
Eto’o accepted the sentence, however blamed his representative, José Maria Mesalles, for what occurred. Mesalles was given a one-year prison sentence.
Eto’o, 41, played for Barcelona from 2004-09, assisting it triumph 2 Champions League titles and 3 Spanish league trophies.
He retired as a player a few years ago and is presently the President of the Cameroonian football federation.
