De Kock and Van der Dussen’s Century Partnership Propels South Africa to Dominant 357 against New Zealand

In an exhilarating World Cup clash, South Africa showcased their batting prowess, amassing a commanding score of 357/4 against New Zealand. The spotlight was firmly on Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen, who delivered magnificent centuries, setting a daunting target for their opponents. Let’s delve into the details of this high-scoring contest.

Early Setback: Bavuma Departs, South Africa Loses Toss

Despite losing the toss, South Africa encountered an initial setback as Temba Bavuma was dismissed by an outstanding delivery from Trent Boult. Bavuma had shown promise against Matt Henry, displaying exquisite drives and even launching a towering six. However, this marked the entry of Rassie van der Dussen, who would go on to play a pivotal role in the innings. Dussen partnered with Quinton de Kock, and together, they created history with a monumental performance.

The Monumental Partnership:
This dynamic duo crafted an astonishing 200-run partnership for the second wicket, establishing the highest partnership for South Africa against New Zealand in ODIs, regardless of the wicket. Quinton de Kock, a prolific run-scorer, achieved his fourth century in the World Cup and his 21st century in ODIs, despite a few hiccups along the way, including a dropped catch when he was on 12. De Kock displayed remarkable skills, reaching his century off 103 balls and demonstrating control and authority over his batting as the innings progressed.

Van der Dussen’s Role and Stroke of Luck

Rassie van der Dussen, while not as fluent as De Kock, rode his luck to reach his century. He survived two crucial chances during the same Jimmy Neesham over, at 68 and 72. However, he kept his composure and eventually secured his second century in this World Cup and his sixth in ODIs overall. Tim Southee managed to dismiss Van der Dussen for 133 in the 48th over, but not before his 118-ball innings had laid a solid foundation for South Africa’s total.

Exploiting the PowerPlay and Strong Finish:
The partnership between De Kock and Van der Dussen allowed South Africa to accumulate a remarkable 190 runs during the second PowerPlay, positioning them for a robust finish in the death overs. Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller took advantage of this opportunity, with Miller’s explosive 53 off 30 balls, including two fours and four powerful sixes, displaying an aggressive approach at the crease. South Africa managed to add 119 runs in the last ten overs, further bolstering their total. With a challenging target of 358 runs on the scoreboard, New Zealand faces an uphill battle as they attempt to chase down this formidable total.
