Cristiano Ronaldo Will Play for Portugal ‘As Long As He Wants’, Says Coach Ricardo Carvalho Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

Cristiano Ronaldo is still shining for Portugal at the age of 40. The superstar striker has been in great form in recent games. He scored three goals in two matches against Armenia and Hungary. Despite his age, Ronaldo shows no signs of slowing down.

Portugal assistant coach Ricardo Carvalho believes Ronaldo will stay in the team for as long as he chooses. Speaking to A Bola, the former defender praised Ronaldo’s contribution and leadership.

Ronaldo Still Leading Strong: Ricardo Carvalho

“I feel it will be as long as he wants,” Carvalho said. “He has earned so much credit over the years. He is doing well, and that is the most important thing. Coach Roberto Martinez had all the merit in bringing him back after the 2022 World Cup. We feel Cristiano Ronaldo can make it to the World Cup.”

Carvalho added that nobody knows how long Ronaldo can keep playing at this level. “We are all happy that he is our captain and leading the team,” he said.

The assistant coach also spoke about Ronaldo’s role as a leader. “We have good leaders,” Carvalho explained. “Cristiano knows he will eventually lose the fight against time. But right now, he feels good and is very important. He is taking things day by day.”

Carvalho also pointed out that Portugal has many other experienced players ready to lead. “We have players from big clubs who are champions. Cristiano leads in his own way. He has grown a lot since 2003. The team is full of talent and good leaders.”

Ronaldo has already lifted three trophies with Portugal. These include the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles. He now has his eyes on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For coach Roberto Martinez, having Ronaldo fit and in form is a huge boost. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains one of the most important players in the squad. Portugal fans will hope their captain can guide them to more success in the coming years.
